Aim and objective:


The course is designed for operators that work with surface grinders, internal grinders, cylindrical grinders or other precision grinding equipment. On completion delegates will have had training in the safe and efficient use of abrasive wheels in line with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 1998). Introduction to the abrasive wheel regulations (PUWER 98)

                 Legal requirement for training.

                 Hazards and dangers in the use of abrasive wheels.

                 Personal protective equipment.

                 Abrasive wheel marking system.

                 Speeds of abrasive wheels.

                 Safe use of Superabrasives (diamond and CBN) if applicable.

Receipt, handling, storage and inspection of abrasive wheels

                 Receipt and storage.

                 Inspection, examination and testing.

Machines and work areas

                 The importance of machine maintenance.


                 Examination and correct use of flanges, guards and work-rests.


                 Condition of spindles and bearings.


                 Machine controls.


                 Maximum operating surface speed. Speed of spindles.


                 Condition of floors and work area. Protection for third parties.


Practical training and assessment in the mounting of abrasive wheels


                 Inspection of the machine and work area.


                 Personal protective equipment assessment.


                 Correct procedures for removing and mounting abrasive wheels.


                 Dressing and conditioning of wheels.


                 Assessment of delegates practical ability in the mounting of abrasive wheels.
