Safety training for operators of angle grinders, chop saws, die grinders and bench/pedestal grinders

 

Duration:

 

Up to 4 hours.

 

Aim and objective:

 

The course is designed for operators that may work with any of the following:

 

  • angle grinders
  • chop saws
  • die grinders
  • bench and pedestal grinders.

 

On completion delegates will have had training in the safe and efficient use of abrasive wheels and discs in line with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 1998).

Who should attend:

 

Ideal for delegates working with the machines mentioned that require training in the safe use of abrasive wheels and discs. Suitable for delegates working in fabrication, general engineering, automotive workshops and maintenance departments in all industries. Prior knowledge of working with abrasives is desirable but is not essential.

 

Location:

 

Direct on your premises with your operators and most importantly with your machines.

 

Personal protective equipment:

 

Delegates are expected to be provided with personal protective equipment. The trainer will provide his own personal protective equipment and will make recommendations as to the level of personal protective equipment required for delegates to complete their work safely.

  • Legal requirement for training.
  • Hazards and dangers in the use of abrasive wheels and discs.
  • Risk assessment.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) evaluation and requirements.

How abrasive wheels and discs work

  • Abrasive types, grain size, bond, grade and structure.
  • The marking system.
  • The Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives.
  • Safety icons.
  • Typical wheel and disc specifications.
  • Marking system for diamond abrasive wheels and discs.

Receipt, handling, storage and inspection of abrasive wheels and discs

  • Receipt and inspection.
  • How to handle and store discs and wheels.
  • Testing and inspection prior to use.

Machines and work areas

  • The importance of regular machine maintenance.
  • Examination and correct use of flanges, guards and work-rests.
  • Condition of spindles and bearings.
  • Machine controls.
  • Maximum operating surface speed. Speed of spindles.
  • Condition of floors and work area.
  • Protection for third parties.

Practical training and assessment in the mounting of abrasive wheels and discs

  • Inspection of machine and work area
  • Correct procedures for removing and mounting abrasive wheels and discs.
  • Dressing and conditioning of wheels on bench/pedestal grinders.
  • Assessment of delegates practical ability in the mounting of abrasive wheels and discs.
